What the Belz Museum displays

What the Belz Museum displays

The Belz Museum presents Asian and Judaic art alongside objects from several other traditions and disciplines. Its collection includes Chinese art, Judaica, Russian lacquer boxes, contemporary glass, Italian mosaics, mineral specimens and scholar’s rocks.

The collection grew from Jack and Marilyn Belz’s interest in Asian art, which they began collecting in 1968. The idea for a museum followed in 1995, after part of their collection was lent for an exhibition at Memphis’s Pink Palace Museum. The museum opened in 1998 as Peabody Place Museum.

With 14,000 square feet of exhibition space and nearly 1,000 objects, the museum brings together a broad range of material in one downtown location. The Chinese collection includes works from the Qing Dynasty, which lasted from 1644 to 1911.

The museum has three permanent galleries: the Main Gallery with Judaic Section, the Tusk Gallery and the Imperial Retreat Gallery. Together, they provide the framework for viewing its varied collections.

The Judaic Section includes works commissioned by Jack and Marilyn Belz. It has also been updated with previously undisplayed pieces, including an original work by Jack Belz.

For a focused visit, you can ask about the museum’s guided Asian, Judaic Gallery and Holocaust Memorial Gallery tours; it also publishes adult and student group tours and an Emperor’s Lunch and Tour.

Memphis Travel describes the museum as accessible and notes Wi-Fi and guided tours among its amenities. If a tour or group visit matters to your plans, contact the museum to confirm arrangements before setting out.
